Color Shift

I wrote this piece for my junior recital and it was premiered a few weeks later on April 21, 2014.

It was a fun piece to write and perform – it developed over a few weeks from the harmony to the melody. I just listened to the Pat Metheny album KIN (←→) I remember sitting at the piano thinking, how can I approach this harmonically, as Pat Metheny might. Melodically, I took a lot of inspiration from another piece I wrote “Window” and also from the common-tone concept permeating John Coltrane's Moments Notice. I was really happy about how the group ended up playing it on my recital.
